The U.S. oil and gas industry supports 9.2 million jobs nationwide. The construction and utility industries, which play a key role in energy development and delivery, are among the most heavily unionized in our nation’s economy. Unemployment for construction remains the highest of any private sector industry, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. New projects within oil and natural gas development represent one of best opportunities for members of the Building Trades Unions to go back to work, with a recent McKenzie Woods study finding that a “pro-development” strategy could create 1 million jobs by 2013.
